synopsis
Indie singer-songwriter Josh Garrels’ story is one of redemption and discovery. After a descent into drug abuse, Garrels rebounded thanks to his Christian faith and love of music. In this tender and moving music documentary, Garrels and his family travel to Mayne Island, British Columbia to collaborate and make beautiful music with a group of musical strangers who contacted Garrels through his website. The film features extraordinary live recording sessions set amongst the lush and beautiful natural landscape of the island, interviews with the band members and vignettes showing Garrels’ daily challenges, including how he harnesses his creative talents. The film also explores the unique relationship Garrels developed with his fans, which allows him to sidestep the economic limitations of a music industry in freefall. Beautifully photographed and quietly compelling, THE SEA IN BETWEEN is a fascinating journey into the mind and creative process of an engaging artist.
