synopsis

When British minister Simon Foster makes an off-the-cuff remark about the unlikeliness of Mideast military invasion by the UK and US, the prime minister orders Foster to present a more pro-war position. As Foster and his hapless new aide Toby try to correct his mistakes, the pair are thrown further and further into a nightmarishly cynical world where media manipulation is used to make policy decisions that affect thousands and thousands of innocent lives. Armando Iannucci’s brilliant black comedy was released one year after the end of the Bush presidency, whose imaginary WMD-inspired invasion of Iraq is the clear object of vicious satire here.
