An off-beat video artist tries to attract the attention of a snooty curator. A divorced shoe salesman tries to make a life for his kids. Two girls flirt with a neighborhood pervert, while next door a young boy is engaged in scatological silliness in an adult chat room. Miranda July’s unique portrait of strange characters in an even stranger world sidesteps the cliches of quirky ensemble indie movies, instead achieving what Roger Ebert - who named the film the fifth best film of the decade - called a tone of “fragile magic.” As with her acclaimed performance art, July imbues her characters with a sense of wonder and joy about the world around them and the struggles they face every day.
