Sharing directorial duties with his daughter Sarah and her husband David McMahon, Burns crafts a gripping chronicle of an explosive case in which police, courts, and journalists railroaded a group of black teenagers for a brutal rape they didn’t commit. Like THE THIN BLUE LINE, CENTRAL PARK FIVE shows the failures of the justice system, and makes a solid case against the man who actually committed the horrific crime. Two years after the film, New York City settled the case for $41 million dollars, no doubt thanks to the way the film drew attention to it.

synopsis

In 1989, five black and Latino teenagers from Harlem were arrested and later convicted of raping a white woman in New York City's Central Park. THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE tells the story of that horrific crime, the rush to judgment by the police, a media clamoring for sensational stories, and an outraged public. It is the first film to chronicle The Central Park Jogger case from the perspective of these five teenagers whose lives were upended by this miscarriage of justice.
