Though he’s known for wild films filled with dreamlike imagery like ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, Michel Gondry defied expectations with this grounded portrait of his aunt Suzette, whose seemingly ordinary life in the French countryside masked surprising complexities. As in ETERNAL SUNSHINE and other films, Gondry focuses on the pain and resentment in a troubled relationship, this time between Suzette and her son Jean-Yves - the titular thorn in her heart. The result is moving film full of wisdom and laughter.
